Image FAQ

General

Using consistent image sizes and aspect ratios is crucial for creating a professional and visually appealing storefront. The Sampo theme automatically optimizes image sizes for different devices, ensuring that your images look sharp on any screen.

  • Aspect Ratio: This refers to the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height (e.g., 4:3, 16:9, 1:1 square).

  • Image Size: While the theme automatically scales images, using high-resolution images (at least 2000px on the longest side) ensures clarity and sharpness.

How to adjust aspect ratios?

In Sampo theme you can adjust aspect ratios both in the general theme settings and at the section level. The supported aspect ratios are: 

  • Natural (automatic aspect ratio)
  • Portrait (2:3)
  • Portrait (3:4)
  • Square (1:1)
  • Landscape (4:3)

Adjusting aspect ratios

To select aspect ratios for different cards in the theme, navigate to:

  • Theme settings >
    • Product card > Image aspect ratio
    • Collection card > Image aspect ratio
    • Article card > Image aspect ratio

Some sections allow you to select the aspect ratio in the section settings, see for example these sections:

  • Image with text
  • Promo Grid & Slideshow
  • Featured product

What is the optimal image size?

On Shopify, you can upload images of up to 5000 x 5000 pixels with a maximum file size of 20 MB.

  • For square product images, a recommended size is 2048 x 2048 pixels 

For Shopify's zoom functionality to work, your images must be more than 800 x 800 pixels.

Recommended image sizes for different use cases

Hero image

  • Aspect ratio: Landscape is the general recommendation. However, in the Sampo theme you can customize the Hero image's height, allowing for non-landscape dimensions. Your choice for the height in the theme editor determines the most suitable image shape.
  • Size recommendations (landscape dimensions)
    • Width: Between 1280 px and 2500 px
    • Height: Between 720 px and 900 px 

Product images

  • Image format: For the featured product and variant images we recommend to use PNG images with transparency. Sampo is designed to work best with when the featured image doesn't include a background.
  • Aspect ratio: We recommend to use a single aspect ratio across all your product images, for example 1:1 (square). The theme works well with various aspect ratios and with Theme and Product template settings you can choose how you fit your product images to the image areas.
  • Size: Long edge 2048 pixels. So in 1:1 it would mean 2048 x 2048 pixels.
